What is Titan Quest 2?

Titan Quest 2 is a Hack and Slash ARPG and the sequel to the original Titan Quest game released back in 2006. Previously published by THQ and developed by Iron Lore Entertainment, this second Titan Quest installment has been picked up by THQ Nordic and is being developed by Grimlore Games, the developers of Spellforce 3. Following a trend in revitalizing beloved old game series, with Baldur's Gate 3 coming out 23 years after the initial Baldur's Gate 2 release date and Dragon's Dogma 2 set to be released 12 years after it's predecessor's release, Titan Quest 2 has been announced after 17 years.

Like the first game, Titan Quest 2 is set in a fantastical version of Ancient Greece. From the first trailer, we know that the main antagonist of the game is Nemesis, Goddess of Retribution. She is seen corrupting the Threads of Fate, dooming those who don't bow down to her to a fate worse that death, though for what reason remains yet to be seen. Players will be able to set out on an adventure worthy of myth that takes them from picturesque beaches, to serene Greek temples, to places where no mortal has ever ventured, including the mysterious realm of the Moirai themselves. Battle classic creatures from Greek myth and the original Titan Quest, including Ichthians, Centaurs, Satyrs, Harpies, Sirens, Gryphons, and many, many more.

Masteries are set to return to the game. Through this advanced Skill Tree, players will be able to mix and match two masteries specializing in different aspects of combat, such as melee fighting, elemental damage, defense, or control skills, to create their own unique Class. Titan Quest 2 will also feature a comprehensive affix crafting system that will allow players to customize their weapons to fit their builds and even turn common weapons into legendary weapons worthy of fables.

Titan Quest 2: Everything we know so far

Titan Quest 2 Story & Setting

"Tell us the whole story. Tell us about hope"

The announcement trailer of Titan Quest 2 gives us a sneak peek into what the game will be about. Set in ancient Greece with heavy inspiration from real life mythology like it's predecessor, the scene opens with three ladies, likely the Moirai, more commonly known as the Fates, inspecting a golden thread of fate. We are then pulled towards Sparta and the soldiers that march towards the city. The Fates go on to explain how Sparta was destined for greatness, until the scene changes and Nemesis, the Goddess of Retribution, angered by the immense ambition shown by mankind, is shown corrupting the threads of fate, condemning those caught to eternal punishment. The trailer ends on a hopeful note, with one lone soldier amongst the chaos gripping their weapon in defiance against the vengeful goddess.

As of now, we are unsure of how far after or before the first game Titan Quest 2 takes place. Titan Quest DLCs also explore other mythologies besides those of ancient Greece, leading the player character into ancient Egypt and China, and exploring the legends and stories of those areas. While the base game might be heavily centered on Greece, it is possible that future DLCs for Titan Quest 2 may delve into other popular mythologies and introduce new and exciting landscapes from their places of origin.

A World of Myth and Monsters

Set out on an adventure worthy of myth that takes you from picturesque beaches, to serene Greek temples, to places where no mortal has ever ventured, including the mysterious realm of the Moirai themselves. Battle classic creatures from Greek myth and the original Titan Quest, including Ichthians, Centaurs, Satyrs, Harpies, Sirens, Gryphons, and many, many more.

A Challenge Fit for a Hero

Heroic deeds require heroic effort. The enemies you face are far from defenseless - dodge and counter their attacks, then overwhelm them with a well-timed flurry of blows. Powerful rituals allow you to freely control the game’s difficulty, while deep character customization systems ensure that there’s always a good reason to replay.

Exploration-Focused Campaign

Pay close attention to your surroundings! The world is full of mysteries and secrets to discover. Legendary monsters lurk in hidden groves, and you never know when you will end up face-to-face with a god. Visit memorable towns full of life and intrigue. The conversations you engage in and the items you find along your journey can lead to surprising discoveries, or they might just hold the key to stopping Nemesis. This is your adventure.

Encounter stunning vistas and deep caverns, and traverse the world with your divine mount, Areion. Use the powers of the gods to uncover secret locations and explore lovingly designed levels full of verticality. Join up with friends to take on the Goddess of Retribution. Like Jason and the Argonauts, sometimes you need a group of heroes for your journey.

Enemies form factions and work together, combining their unique skills and abilities to keep you on your toes. Use the deep character build system and access every skill at your disposal to vanquish them in this unique action-RPG experience.

Gameplay Features in Titan Quest 2

Titan Quest 2 Basic Combat

Expect Titan Quest 2 to adopt a similar combat system to the first Titan Quest game. Two key resources typical to ARPGs will be present in Titan Quest 2 - Health and Energy. Health determines your character's vitality. Put simply if depleted, your character will die. Energy is the resource required to perform certain skills. The skills available to you is determined by your chosen Masteries, however, each Mastery features two types of skills - Active and Passive Skills. Active skills require energy to perform, with higher tier and more powerful skills requiring more energy, while passive skills are available at all times after investing into it.

Rather than choose a class you'll run through the game with, you can choose up to two Masteries to combine together to customize your playstyle. Masteries are essentially skill trees, each of which specialize in their own type of damage, which attributes they scale off of, and what kind of skills are available. Some Masteries may give you power over storms, allowing you to deal cold and lightning spells capable of freezing and stunning foes, while others may provide you with a myriad of buffs and debuffs, increasing you and your allies' potentials. Masteries couldn't be swapped and respecced, you could only reset and change how your skill points were allocated, but this may be a new mechanic introduced into Titan Quest 2 to open up new possibilities in customization.

The original Titan Quest featured three difficulty levels - Normal, Epic, and Legendary. A higher difficulty would result in higher base level enemies, but reward you with greater chances to gain high rarity gear. In order to unlock the next difficulty level, you would have had to complete the campaign on the previous difficulty. Titan Quest 2 may allow players to freely change between each difficulty, albeit at a high cost.

Items & Crafting in Titan Quest 2

Items, specifically Weapons and Armor, will play a huge part in character progression in Titan Quest 2. As you progress through the game, you will find and be able to craft more powerful equipment, which in turn will allow you to tackle harder encounters and missions, leading to a loop in gameplay and progression. Every item serves a function, and every character class has many options when it comes to finding the perfect equipment. In the original Titan Quest, weapon drops are determined by the weapon that the enemy is holding. You could find a centaur that wields a bow and when defeated, it would drop the very same bow it wielded, while another centaur wielding an axe would drop the axe after being defeated. It is possible that this mechanic will return to Titan Quest 2.

Each piece of equipment will have varying rarities that determine how many random modifiers, i.e. special effects, it will have. Titan Quest had the following rarities:

  • White - Regular items with no modifiers.
  • Yellow - Magical items with 1 modifier.
  • Green - Rare items with 2 or more modifiers.
  • Olive Green - Unique monster drops that have a fixed special skill and 2 or more modifiers.
  • Blue - Epic items with fixed modifiers and set bonuses.
  • Purple - Legendary items with fixed modifiers and set bonuses.

Weapons and Armor could be enhanced through socketing Relics and Charms. These two socketable items were acquired as set drops from enemies in certain acts, and provided basic stat boosts, as well as set bonuses when enough of the same Relic or Charm were socketed in. They were upgradable through the game's relatively simple crafting system. By combining three of the same Relic and five of the same Charm, you could enhance the effects of these items. Do note that Blue and Purple items could not have Relics and Charms socketed into them. This mechanic will likely return in Titan Quest 2.

A new crafting mechanic not heavily touched upon as of yet is Affix Crafting. From it's name, we can speculate that this mechanic will allow you to modify, or even add, new modifiers onto any weapon, allowing you to transform even the most basic equipment into legendary status. This will open up a whole new avenue in equipment and build customization not seen in the original Titan Quest. As with Relics and Charms, there is a chance that Blue and Purple items will not be available for Affix Crafting.

Combining Masteries to create Classes

In Titan Quest 2, Masteries are Skill Trees that determine your playstyle and the type of damage you deal. Players can customize their characters, forming their own unique classes by combining two masteries. Build your character around the strengths and weakness of both masteries, exploring different combinations of skill modifiers, attributes, and items to create your own hybrid class and find your favorite playstyle. Grow your powers from those of a young mortal to a hero to rival the gods themselves!

Titan Quest featured eight Masteries on release, but had three additional ones added through DLCs. Several, if not all, may make a come back to Titan Quest 2. Your Mastery can be improved by spending Mastery points. This resource is gained every time you level up. There are two ways to spend and allocate mastery points. Firstly, by spending them on unlocking and upgrading new skills. Two types of skills are featured in Titan Quest: ones with circle-shaped icons - passive skills, and ones with square-shaped icons - active skills. The skill tree has a tiered system, meaning that adjacent lower-tiered skills must be first unlocked before being able to unlock a higher-tiered skills, and skills in higher tiers cost more Mastery Points to be obtained or upgraded.

Mastery Points can additionally be used to upgrade the Mastery itself through a tier meter. Allocating points into this meter grants you the ability to access the higher-tiered skills, and gives you a boost to you Dexterity, Intelligence, and Strength stats, allowing you to deal more damage with the stat your damage type scales off of.

The eleven Masteries you can find in the original Titan Quest are:

Defense

This Mastery is, as it's name implies, focused on player defenses through providing defensive buffs and allowing the player to make the most out of having a shield equipped. Some of the buffs in question include giving you and your allies a higher chance to block attacks, decreasing your damage and energy taken, increasing your resistance to status effects, and so on. The Defense Mastery additionally allows the player character to perform a series of maneuvers with a shield, including dashes that have a chance to stun enemies, slams that disrupt enemy actions, and spells that summon the spirit of fallen comrades.

Dream

A Mastery added through the Immortal Throne DLC, this skill tree is a flexible one that is a strong contender for a secondary Mastery, providing a variety of powerful effects. These effects include tough summons that will not only take damage for you, but can also dish out significant damage through a pet buff in the skill tree, strong crowd control spells that debilitate enemies through stuns and lowered resistances, and auras that buff your speed, damage, and defenses.

Earth

Though called Earth Mastery, this skill tree allows the character to specialize not only in earth spells, but also in fire-oriented spells. As is the trend in spellcasters, characters with this mastery will have lower defenses than those with martial Masteries, but boast great area of effect (AoE) damage. The Earth Mastery also provides some good buffs and debuffs to damage and defense for allies and enemies respectively.

Hunting

Another martial Mastery, characters with the Hunting Mastery specialize in increasing piercing damage, the perfect Mastery for those who prefer an archery-focused playstyle or being a melee fighter with a spear, capable of high single-target burst damage. This tree also allows players to deal decent damage over time (DoT) through bleeding, and debuff enemy defenses while buffing their own speed.

Nature

Nature Mastery is another well-rounded skill tree, being one of the best defensive-oriented Masteries. With access to summons, and defensive buffs and debuffs that complement many, if not all, damage types, there is a lot of room for strong synergies with other Masteries. This Mastery gives the character access to healing magics, buffs that increase character damage and speed, debuffs that make enemies more vulnerable to various damage types and status effects, and summons that can apply even more buffs to bolster the caster and their allies.

Neidan

A Mastery added with the Eternal Embers DLC and a great Mastery for taking as a secondary Mastery; this skill tree turns the character into a monk that channels chi to inflict debuffs onto foes, but also has the ability to create concoctions that deal elemental damage onto foes and buffs themselves and allies. Their buffs include improving resistances to elemental damage and improving the damage and speed of the character and their allies. This in conjunction with a debuff to lower enemy resistances is a great recipe to maximize any elemental damage you deal.

Rogue

A martial Mastery that can provide boosts to piercing, poison, and bleeding damage, and have active skills that deal the same damage types. Rogue Mastery is a decent skill tree to take as a secondary Mastery to supplement your damage with additional poison ticks. With certain skills, characters with this skill tree can also inflict prolonged confusion, causing enemies to fumble their attacks.

Rune

Added with the Ragnarok DLC, this skill tree allows the character to deal various types of elemental damage, or if taken as a secondary Mastery, provides supplementary elemental damage. On top of this, it is one of two masteries that enable dual-wielding and can inflict a myriad of status effects such as slow, confusion, freeze, and stun.

Spirit

Yet another strong defensive Mastery, this skill tree provides powerful buffs and debuffs, a few healing spells, and access to some pets. Despite primarily being focused on utility and defense, this Mastery also gives the character the ability to deal decent vitality damage. With this Mastery, you'll be able to bolster your bleeding and vitality damage and shred enemy resistances to the same damage types.

Storm

A spellcasting Mastery similar to Earth, Storm Mastery features even more AoE damage and the ability to inflict status effects, but at the cost of being even more fragile. Active damaging skills under this skill tree deal either cold or lighting damage, and may additionally sap enemies of their energy, immobilize or slow enemies, inhibit their movement, or disable/stun enemies. Though few, this skill tree also includes some skills that can strip enemy resistances and reduce the damage they deal.

Warfare

The martial Mastery, this skill tree is fully geared towards boosting and dealing burst physical damage, both single-target and AoEs. It is additionally one of two Masteries that enable dual-wielding. You'll find everything you want for physical damage in this tree, from physical damage buffs for you and your allies to physical resistance shredding for enemies. Some skills in this tree also allow you to inflict bleed.
