Titan Quest 2 Overview

Titan Quest 2, the sequel to the original 2006 Hack and Slash ARPG published by THQ and developed by Iron Lore Entertainment, this installment is now under the wing of THQ Nordic and in development by Grimlore Games, known for Spellforce 3. Like the first game, Titan Quest 2 is set in a fantastical version of Ancient Greece. The game introduces Nemesis, the Goddess of Retribution, as the primary antagonist, weaving a narrative around the corruption of the Threads of Fate. Players will be able to set out on an adventure worthy of a myth that takes them from picturesque beaches to serene Greek temples, to places where no mortal has ever ventured, including the mysterious realm of the Moirai themselves. Battle classic creatures from Greek myth and the original Titan Quest, including Ichthians, Centaurs, Satyrs, Harpies, Sirens, Gryphons, and many, many more.

Masteries are set to return to the game. Through this advanced Skill Tree, players will be able to mix and match two masteries specializing in different aspects of combat, such as melee fighting, elemental damage, defense, or control skills, to create their own unique Class. Additionally, Titan Quest 2 boasts an extensive affix crafting system, empowering players to customize weapons, transforming mundane items into legendary artifacts worthy of folklore.

Titan Quest 2 Basic Combat

Expect Titan Quest 2 to adopt a similar combat system to the first Titan Quest game. Two key resources typical to ARPGs will be present in Titan Quest 2 - Health and Energy. Health determines your character's vitality. Put simply if depleted, your character will die. Energy is the resource required to perform certain skills. The skills available to you are determined by your chosen Masteries, however, each Mastery features two types of skills - Active and Passive Skills. Active skills require energy to perform, with higher tier and more powerful skills requiring more energy, while passive skills are available at all times after investing into it.

Rather than choose a class you'll run through the game with, you can choose up to two Masteries to combine together to customize your playstyle. Masteries are essentially skill trees, each of which specializes in their own type of damage, which attributes they scale off of, and what kind of skills are available. Some Masteries may give you power over storms, allowing you to deal cold and lightning spells capable of freezing and stunning foes, while others may provide you with a myriad of buffs and debuffs, increasing you and your allies' potential. Masteries couldn't be swapped and respecced, you could only reset and change how your skill points were allocated, but this may be a new mechanic introduced into Titan Quest 2 to open up new possibilities in customization.

The original Titan Quest featured three difficulty levels - Normal, Epic, and Legendary. A higher difficulty would result in higher base level enemies, but reward you with greater chances to gain high rarity gear. In order to unlock the next difficulty level, you would have had to complete the campaign on the previous difficulty. Titan Quest 2 may allow players to freely change between each difficulty, albeit at a high cost.

Masteries in Titan Quest 2

In Titan Quest 2, Masteries are Skill Trees that determine your playstyle and the type of damage you deal. Players can customize their characters, forming their own unique classes by combining two masteries. Build your character around the strengths and weaknesses of both masteries, exploring different combinations of skill modifiers, attributes, and items to create your own hybrid class and find your favorite playstyle. Players can mix and match 2 masteries to make their own class. From the previous game, you can choose your first mastery once you reach level 2, and then you can choose your second mastery once you reach level 8. Listed below are the Masteries you can choose from:

  • Storm Mastery
  • Defense Mastery
  • Earth Mastery
  • Nature Mastery
  • Warfare Mastery
  • Hunting Mastery
  • Spirit Mastery
  • Rogue Mastery
  • Dream Mastery
  • Rune Mastery
  • Neidan Mastery

Items & Crafting in Titan Quest 2

Items, specifically Weapons and Armor, will play a huge part in character progression in Titan Quest 2. As you progress through the game, you will find and be able to craft more powerful equipment, which in turn will allow you to tackle harder encounters and missions, leading to a loop in gameplay and progression. Every item serves a function, and every character class has many options when it comes to finding the perfect equipment. In the original Titan Quest, weapon drops are determined by the weapon that the enemy is holding. You could find a centaur that wields a bow and when defeated, it would drop the very same bow it wielded, while another centaur wielding an axe would drop the axe after being defeated. It is possible that this mechanic will return to Titan Quest 2.

Each piece of equipment will have varying rarities that determine how many random modifiers, i.e. special effects, it will have. Titan Quest had the following rarities:

  • White - Regular items with no modifiers.
  • Yellow - Magical items with 1 modifier.
  • Green - Rare items with 2 or more modifiers.
  • Olive Green - Unique monster drops that have a fixed special skill and 2 or more modifiers.
  • Blue - Epic items with fixed modifiers and set bonuses.
  • Purple - Legendary items with fixed modifiers and set bonuses.

Weapons and Armor could be enhanced through socketing Relics and Charms. These two socketable items were acquired as set drops from enemies in certain acts, and provided basic stat boosts, as well as set bonuses when enough of the same Relic or Charm were socketed in. They were upgradable through the game's relatively simple crafting system. By combining three of the same Relic and five of the same Charm, you could enhance the effects of these items. Do note that Blue and Purple items could not have Relics and Charms socketed into them. This mechanic will likely return in Titan Quest 2.

A new crafting mechanic not heavily touched upon as of yet is Affix Crafting. From its name, we can speculate that this mechanic will allow you to modify, or even add, new modifiers onto any weapon, allowing you to transform even the most basic equipment into legendary status. This will open up a whole new avenue in equipment and build customization not seen in the original Titan Quest. As with Relics and Charms, there is a chance that Blue and Purple items will not be available for Affix Crafting.
